Developing Standard Product Offerings to Enable Operations Scalability and Cycle-Time Reduction

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

A Fortune 500 gas and electric utility launched a new business line to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure across its operating territories.  During an initial pilot program, the client built 100% custom installations utilizing turn-key design-build contractors. At the pilot’s conclusion the business sought to scale operations and decrease installation cycle-time.  However, a lack of transparency in design-build processes paired with the nature of a 100% custom product offering resulted in the inability to scale and continued longevity for installation cycle-times.

SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Conducted a product portfolio analysis based on historical projects and product specifications
  • Facilitated 3rdparty electrical engineering to build modular, standard designs based on product portfolio requirements and demand trends
  • Worked with client material standards group to derive material packages per standard designs, incorporating interchangeability of materials between varying OEMs
  • Built a material forecasting tool based on standard offering scenarios
  • Created annual forecast for bulk material procurement

KEY BENEFITS
  • Standardized product offerings for EV charging station infrastructure & charger configurations
  • Decreased installation cycle-time through utilization of pre-stocked modular kits
  • Enabled on-the-shelf availability of long-lead materials
