Enabling Supply Chain for Scalability Amongst Global Material Shortages

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

A Fortune 500 gas and electric utility launched a new business line to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure across its operating territories.  After completion of a pilot program using turn-key design-build contractors, the client sought to increase capital investment through increased installations.  However, a combination of lacking design-build transparency, standards, and immature business processes created a reactionary environment that was not fit to scale.  Supply chain material constraints further impacted the business, pushing installation cycle-times to over 12 months.

SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Shifted operating model from an outsourced “black box” to core competency network model.
  • Analyzed and designed materials management processes to stock critical long-lead materials with 3rdparty logistics provider to meet increasing demand and provide supplier redundancies
  • Implemented people, process, and technology changes to drive transparency, accountability, and standardization across six focal areas: demand planning & forecasting, engineering design, procurement, inventory management, logistics, and asset management.

KEY BENEFITS
  • Decreased installation cycle-time by more than 6 months / 50%
  • Increased material readiness posture
  • Improved financial controls and transparency
  • Leveraged core competencies with partners and internal teams to implement a responsive, scalable supply chain operations framework
